{"id":432,"date":"2017-12-01T22:46:31","date_gmt":"2017-12-02T03:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shadowflood.com\/s02\/?p=432"},"modified":"2019-10-25T10:59:13","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T14:59:13","slug":"bad-guitar-better-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shadowflood.com\/s02\/bad-guitar-better-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"Bad guitar = better photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\n\tBeing a crappy guitar player and loving 80&#39;s synth riffs, somehow, made me a better photographer<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>\n\tI think that one thing that makes me a good (descent? maybe?) live music photographer is that I&#39;m a musician (a bad one) before I&#39;m a photographer.&nbsp; Like any kid growing up in any town across the world, I had parents that encouraged me to try all kinds of things.&nbsp; I played clarinet throughout middle school and high school.&nbsp; I (forcibly) took piano lessons.&nbsp; And, most importantly, I picked up the guitar somewhere around 7th or 8th grade.\n<\/p>\n<h4>\n\tRiffs<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>\n\tI took to guitar.&nbsp; Loved it.&nbsp; I credit my friend Trey with turning me on to Van Halen and it was all over for me.&nbsp; I think it was the first time I heard&#8230;riffs! <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter\" height=\"220\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/1\/12\/VanHalen_5150_fcover.jpg\/220px-VanHalen_5150_fcover.jpg\" width=\"220\" \/> Actually, no I take that back.&nbsp; I think the first time I really heard what I would later come to know as riffs was that song, <em>Axel F<\/em>, from the <em>Beverly Hills Cop<\/em> soundtrack.&nbsp; That and the Miami Vice soundtrack.&nbsp; Aw, man, I loved those songs!&nbsp; I think that should have been my first clue that I would love music, not songs &#8212; I was fascinated with <em>instrumentals<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone\" height=\"233\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/736x\/b1\/6f\/b6\/b16fb674995a5760c8ebbb2b84483738.jpg\" width=\"233\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSo, anyway, where was I&#8230;Oh, yes, guitar.&nbsp; Once I discovered guitar and distortion and rock n&#39; roll, like any good rock fan, it changed me.&nbsp; I played all the time.&nbsp; I was OK.&nbsp; I know that I&#39;m not naturally talented like many of the artists I photograph. What that translates to in terms of photography is that I find my self paying attention to things that a musician might pay attention to.\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tHand positions.\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWhen&#39;s the chorus kick in?\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWhen is the player in the middle of a downstroke?\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWhy the heck does a barre chord just photograph better than a G chord?\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tThese are things I notice that photographers who have never picked up a guitar will ever key in on.&nbsp; It helps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Playing guitar does not come easy.
